Universal Law of the Matrix

In radically associative photographic essays, Maya Rochat studies the image as a product of countless processes of manipulation and processing. The starting point for her monumental pictorial installations since 2015 are fragments of paintings or photographs, her own or by others, which she divides, deforms, repaints, and layers on fabrics, plaster, and plastic films in spectacular performances, usually accompanied by music, and enlarges by transforming them into abstract chromatic spaces using overhead projectors. But the artist is especially interested in expanding painting beyond the limits of the image. This results in multisensory experiential spaces and a rapidly growing body of work that at the same time provides a reserve of material for ever-new images and performances.
