A Rock is a River blends photography and painting to create organic patterns, chromatic shifts, and visual ruptures. This ongoing process of transformation reflects a world in constant flux. Drawing from my photographic work, I’ve woven together images in various scales and rhythms, creating a collage that unfolds throughout the book. By challenging conventional ideas of what a "photograph" should be, I immerse myself in a synesthetic process, where painting, collage, and photography merge seamlessly. The images are layered both digitally and manually, and the layout itself becomes an integral part of the work, incorporating experimentation with printing techniques.
The title, A Rock is a River, reflects the raw material I collected to create the book, much of it shot in the Valle Verzasca in Switzerland and in other landscapes that hold personal significance, such as Peru, where my father lives. Inspired by the transformation of matter in nature—the sculpting forces of water, rocks reshaped by rivers, solids turning to liquids and back again—I apply similar processes of change and layering to my own work. The book has no text and no fixed order, allowing the reader to navigate the images without a conventional beginning or end. Printed in both color and black and white on silver paper, the pages interact with light, creating physical ruptures that activate the work in a dynamic, ever-changing way.
